In 1943, in the middle of World War II, Winston Churchill requested a platypus be sent from Australia to be kept at the London Zoo. The thought process behind this strange act was to boost morale of the country (by seeing an exotic animal never before seen live in London) as well as a way to improve British-Australian relations. Unfortunately the platypus died in transport.
